5 actions to move into a powerful business mindset…
When I visited a beautiful art installation in Bristol recently, I had a moment of clarity that stopped me in my tracks.
The installation was made of tall panes of coloured glass, each a different colour. Each cast a different hue on the buildings you could see in the distance beyond. The buildings were the same—solid, unmoving. But the coloured glass made them look entirely different, depending on which one you were looking through.
It struck me: this is what it’s like to run a business with a human mind.
The facts of your business—the work you do, your goals, your clients—might remain the same. But the way you see them, they way you perceive them, can shift dramatically depending on the colour of the emotional ‘filter’ you’re looking through.
Sometimes we look through a pane of love, excitement, or hope.
Other times, it’s fear, doubt, or overwhelm.
And sometimes, it can feel like our nose is pressed right up against just one pane—like ALL we can see is through fear or ALL we can feel is through not-enoughness.
But here’s the thing:
You are looking through a single pane, not the whole multicoloured, multifaceted picture.
AND
More importantly...
...you can step back.
Here are 5 powerful actions to help you move away from the fear-filter—and reconnect with the full, vibrant picture of your business journey.
1. Remember that feelings are filters, not facts
Your fear isn’t the whole truth. It’s a lens. And like coloured glass, it’s changeable.
That anxious thought which says "I'm not doing enough" or "I'm falling behind"? That’s not an objective reality. It’s a story you’re seeing through a specific emotional filter.
Mindset action: Try gently saying to yourself:
"I notice I'm looking through a fear filter right now. That’s OK. It doesn’t mean the fear is the full truth."
This simple noticing gives you a bit of distance—and a bit more choice and control.
2. Step back and soften your gaze
When we’re in the grip of doubt or hesitation, our awareness narrows. It's like we’ve pressed our face right up against that one filter—unable to see anything else.
But your business is bigger than this moment. Your identity is richer than this emotion.
Mindset Action: Pause, breathe, and ask:
"What else is here, that I might not be seeing right now?"
Even asking this question opens a window to other 'colours': curiosity, courage, possibility.
3. Curate your colour palette
Just as the installation was made up of many panes of coloured glass, your business journey includes many emotional ‘filters’—and not all of them are unhelpful.
Hope. Playfulness. Determination. Excitement. Pride.
These feelings often get overshadowed by the louder voice of fear, but they are still available to you.
Mindset action: Try this quick check-in:
What emotions feel most present in my business right now?
What other emotions would I like to feel more of?
What small actions could invite those colours into my day?
4. Fear doesn’t have to mean something’s gone wrong
One of the biggest mindset traps I see: believing that fear means you’ve made a mistake.
Here’s the thing:
Fear is part of creating something meaningful.
Especially when you’re stretching outside your comfort zone. You’re not broken for feeling scared—you’re a human being doing brave work.
Mindset action: Instead of "Why am I feeling this?", ask:
"What does this fear tell me I care about?"
Often, fear points to value. To growth. To a bigger vision you’re stepping into.
5. You’re allowed to change the glass
The best part? You’re not stuck with just one view.
With practice, awareness, and support, you can learn to step back, shift your lens, and choose how you want to show up—even when fear is in the room.
This is the inner work that makes visibility easier, boundaries firmer, and your energy more sustainable. It’s not about ignoring fear, but learning to see it as one voice—not the whole choir.
Mindset shift: Ask yourself:
"What filter would serve me best today?"
Sometimes, that’s compassion. Other times, it’s playfulness. Or boldness. You get to choose your frame.
You are SO much more than just this one feeling
If your inner critic is whispering doubts right now, please remember:
This moment—this feeling—is not the whole story. You are looking through a single pane. The full window is wide, multicoloured, and full of possibility.
And if you'd like support to step back, soften your gaze, and see your business with new eyes—that’s exactly what I help clients do every day.
